Stem Cell Research:
Stem Cells and Media
Media plays a crucial role in the construction of public understanding of stem cell research and the debates
on ethical and political issues that surround it. Media coverage of stem cell research largely falls under
health science journalism. Increasingly, however, the field of media and stem cell research comes under the
scrutiny of cross disciplinary arenas of ethics, political communication, science communication and public
opinion poll research.
This research guide covers the broad topic of stem cell research and the role of media.
The first part of this guide is a guide to finding journal, magazine, newspaper articles and websites that
treat media coverage (or non-coverage) of stem cell research and studies of public opinion polls regarding
stem cell research.
The second part of the guide is a selection of websites that are used as news sources by journalists and the
public. These websites are combined alphabetical list from several mega websites such as the NIH and the
National Health Museum.
Part I. Finding journal, magazine, newspapers, website articles on stem research
Select one of these Current Events and Newspapers [link] databases and search under terms like: stem cell
research or embryonic stem cells. Use combinations of terms where appropriate (e.g., stem cells and fat
tissue).
