Global Women's Activism: Selected Sites
These sites represent entities devoted to worldwide women's activism. They include
significant documents, UN affiliated NGOs, government agencies, academic institutions,
research centers, as well as focus-specific organizations working on issues such as advocacy,
empowerment, human rights, social justice, HIV/AIDS, prevention of violence against
women, etc. Each site contains links to the organizations' publications and other online
resources useful for investigations on women and gender. The list is arranged by continents
and countries where the organizations are located and/or provide services. The category
"Transnational" lists organizations and other entries with transnational and international
scope. Relevant sites from different units at Rutgers University are also included.

Action Aid
ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency. Their website includes news and videos. The “What we do” section
contains a “women and girls” link with information on women’s rights, women’s activism, and International Women’s Day.
Amnesty International, Stop Violence Against Women Campaign
The link "Resources" includes reports, activists toolkits, and the organizations documents on women's issues.
Association for Progressive Communications Women's Network Support Program
Promotes gender equity in the design, implementation, and use of information and communication technologies, with special focus on inequities based on women's social or ethnic background.
AWID
AWID is an international membership organization connecting, informing and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights. Under "Publications," a wide range of publications is available online.
Coalition Against Trafficking Women (CATW)
Founded in 1988, the CATW is an NGO that promotes women's human rights by working internationally to combat sexual exploitation, especially sex trafficking of women and girls.
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
Provides the full text of the international human rights instrument for women.
Development Alternatives for Women in the New Era (DAWN)
The DAWN network extends throughout the regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Its advocacy work covers themes of the political economy of globalization; political restructuring and social transformation; and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Equality Now
As an international human rights organization, Equality Now commits itself to protecting the civil, political, economic and social rights of girls and women around the world.
GenderIT.org
This organization emerged from the Association for Progressive Communications Women's Networking Support Programme's advocacy work in information and communications technologies. It disseminates examples of national policy, gender-sensitive language, tools for lobbying, etc.
Global Alliance for Women's Health
It works with coalitions of international and national NGOs, women's groups, health care professionals, religious organizations, academics and individual citizens from all regions of the world to provide health promotion, education, advocacy and program implementation. The site contains extensive information and data on women's health including HIV/AIDS and female genital mutilation. It also links to international organizations working on women's health issues.
Global Fund for Women
In English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. This foundation supports women's human rights around the world on issues including access to education, prevention of violence against women, and gaining economic independence. The site lists grant related information including grants available by country, and its bi-annual newsletter Raising our voices (2000- present)
Grassroots Women
This Canada-based organization addresses the systemic political and economic marginalization of working class women. The website contains organizational and campaign news and information.
Human Rights Watch: Women's Rights
This organization exposes human rights violations, as well as practices and policies that silence and subordinate women. Its Website includes news releases, publications, and information by country and by thematic issues on women's rights.
International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA)
Founded in 1998, the IANSA is the global network of organizations working to stop the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. The searchable site contains a wealth of information organized by country and key issues.
International Alert
International Alert was established in 1986 by a group of human rights advocates led by the former Secretary General of Amnesty International, Martin Ennals, in response to growing concerns expressed by those working in international development agencies, human rights organizations and those involved in the issues of ethnic conflict and genocide.
International Alliance of Women (IAW) Alliance Internationale des Femmes
IAW calls on the international community to exercise its responsibility for the protection of human security, human rights, and the fundamental rights. Action programs, reports, and documents are available on its Website in English and French.
International Center for Research on Women
Since its founding in 1976, ICRW has worked with partner organizations and governments throughout the world to promote gender equitable development, reduce poverty, and change the lives of millions of women and girls and their communities. The "ICRW publications" link directs to articles and reports by select subjects. Many of these texts are full text.
International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Council (IGLHRC)
A non-profit NGO, it works to secure the human rights of all people and communities subject to discrimination or abuse on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or HIV status. IGLHRC's work is carried out in Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America & Caribbean; and in the themes of Asylum Documentation Program and HIV/AIDS.
International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF)
IPPF has been providing sexual and reproductive health services since 1952 in more than 180 countries. A collection of resources including papers, articles, speeches, directory of contraceptives are available under "Resources and Information." More information about its six regional offices and its members is available under "Regions."
UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
In English, Spanish and French. INSTRAW was created in 1976 as a result of the recommendation of the 1975 World Conference of the International Women's Year held in Mexico City. Under the link "Libraries," an extensive number of online publications is available.
International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR)
In Japanese and English. Founded in 1988 by one of Japan's largest minorities, the Buraku people, IMADR is an international NGO devoted to eliminating discrimination and racism and advancing human rights. The link "Publications" offers full text of their newsletter Connect (2004- present), and other online resources.
International Women's Democracy Center (IWDC)
The IWDC was established in 1995 to strengthen women's global leadership through training, education, networking and research with a focus on increasing the participation of women leaders in politics, policy and decision making within their own governments. Under "Resources," fact sheets and timelines on women in politics and suffrage provide information of women worldwide.
International Women's Health Coalition
Founded in 1984, the organization works to influence the policies of governments, donors, and international agencies to secure girls' and women's sexual and reproductive health and rights. Under "Resource Library" many documents, fact sheets, and reports are available full text covering topics such as contraception and health, safe abortion, HIV/AIDS, gender and health policies, etc.
International Women's Human Rights Clinic (IWHRC)
Established at Georgetown University Law Center in August 1998, the general mission of the IWHRC is to promote and advance women's human rights throughout the world.
International Women's Media Foundation
The IWMF's mission is to strengthen the role of women in the news media around the world.
International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC)
An international NGO established in l976, IWTC provides information, education, and organizing support services to women's organizations and community groups, particularly low-income women, in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Among the resources available on this site, the "Statistics and Indicators" of women's lives is under "Links and Resources" followed by "Platform for Action."
MADRE
Established in 1983, MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of health and reproductive rights, economic development, education, and other human rights.
Mandat International
Mandat International provides information, documentation, support and accommodation for international conferences and meetings in Geneva working on NGO - UN cooperation, development, human rights, peace, humanitarian, health, refugees, children, indigenous peoples, trade, environment, etc.
The International Legal Search Engine on human rights and humanitarian law enables search by country, domain, topic, and date and a selection of main international conventions.
Minority Rights Group International
Works to secure the rights and to promote cooperation of ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide. The website offers full text of international declarations and instruments, briefing and special papers pertaining to the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples, news and events, a newsletter, list of publications, press releases, and links.
Network Women in Development (WIDE)
The site features readings on women's economic rights, liberalization and globalization, the European Union, and relevant UN documents and events, as well as training material, newsletter, publications and other resources in Spanish.
PATH: a Catalyst for Global Health
PATH is an international nonprofit organization focusing on improving public health. The “what we do” section contains information on maternal and child health and reproductive rights.
Peace Women- Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
In English, Spanish and French, it monitors toward the implementation of
UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. The site is a portal to women's organizations worldwide and lists country specific developments of policies that promote women's empowerment, eradicate violence against women, and secure reproductive rights.
Social Watch
An international network following up the fulfillment of internationally agreed commitments on poverty eradication and equality. It reports on the progress, or regression, of the nations towards these commitments and goals. It contains data and development indicators by country.
UNIFEM
UNIFEM is the women's fund at the UN. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies to foster women's empowerment and gender equality. The site offers briefs, documents, annual reports (2001- present) and other resources on topics including HIV/AIDS, violence against women, human rights, and women/poverty and economics.
Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights
In Albanian, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, English, French, Kiswahili, Russian, Serbian, and Spanish. The only international women's fund in the world designed to respond on short notice, UAF collaborates with women activists in peace building in situations of armed conflict, escalating violence, or politically volatile environments; legal and legislative actions; and protection of women human rights defenders.
Women Human Rights Resource Programme
Produced by the Bora Laskin Law Library at the University of Toronto, this site provides access to information pertaining to international women's human rights law. The site contains the searchable Human Rights Resources Database that offers annotated citations to scholarly articles and documents (such as UN and NGO reports), with links to full text in many cases.
Women in Black
A peace group that started in Israel in 1988 by women protesting against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, it has expanded in many countries including the United States, England, Italy, Spain, Azerbaijan and the former Yugoslavia.
Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children
A watch dog organization, it works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and adolescents. Comprehensive Web portal has links to NGOs and information related to women's peace and freedom. The site also includes UN resolutions and analysis, news and resources, including international and country specific detailed list of women's organizations.
Women's Environmental and Development Organization (WEDO)
WEDO is an international advocacy organization that seeks to increase the power of women worldwide as policymakers at all levels in governments, institutions, and forums to achieve economic and social justice, a healthy and peaceful planet, and human rights for all. The program areas are Gender and Governance, Sustainable Development, and Economic and Social Justice.
Women's Learning Partnership (WLP)
WLP is dedicated to women's leadership and empowerment working with 18 autonomous and independent partner organizations in the Global South, particularly in Muslim-majority societies, to empower women to transform their families, communities, and societies. The link "Partners," subdivided into countries, has section "Women's Status at Glance" with "Country Overview," "Education and health," and "Political participation."

Africa Action
US based organization that works on African political, economic and social issues. It succeeded the American Committee on Africa, The Africa Fund, and the Africa Policy Information Center, which have fought for freedom and justice in Africa since 1953.
African Centre for Constructive Resolution Disputes (ACCORD)
Offers training in conflict management, mediation, and negotiation. The link "Publications" contains full text articles of the African Journal on Conflict Resolution (1999-present) and the magazine Conflict Trends (2002-present).
African Women's Development and Communication Network (FEMNET)
Established in 1988, this NGO promotes African women's development, equality and human rights.
APC Africa Women
A regional program of APC's Women's Networking Support Programme, this organization empowers African women's organizations to access and use information and communication technologies.
Associacion des Femmes Africaines pour la Recherche et Development (AFARD) Association of African Women for Research and Development (AAWORD)
A pan-African NGO based in Dakar, Senegal, it supports research, training and advocacy to promote the economic, political and social rights of African women.
Fahamu Network for Social Justice
Focuses primarily in Africa to support the struggle for human rights and social justice. The site includes

Femmes Africa Solidarité
Has a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council and an observer status with the African Commission for Human and People's Rights. This global action oriented women's resource center that promotes justice and gender equality was founded in 1974 by

Forum for Women in Development (FWID)

African National Congress Women's League
A unit of ANC to oversee and promote women's participation in the democratization process, this site contains documents, press statements, reports and press releases on women's struggles and gender violence. The documents of the Progressive Women's Movement, launched in August 2006 are also posted on this site.

Rape Crisis

International Women's Rights Watch, Asia Pacific

Bhutan
Bhutan Women and Children Organization
An independent NGO established 1991 by Bhutanese women in exile, it advocates for the establishment of democracy; human rights, women's and child rights in Bhutan through peaceful and non-violent means. Women's League of Burma
Established in 1999, the league consists of women's groups and aims to support Burmese women's empowerment and advancement of the status women.

All China Women's Federation
Founded in 1949, ACWF promotes the advancement of Chinese women of all ethnic groups and promotes gender equality.
Fiji
DAWN: Development Alternatives for Women in the New Era
The DAWN network extends throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Its advocacy work covers themes of the political economy of globalization; political restructuring and social transformation; and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Fiji Women's Crisis Centre

Hong Kong
The Women's Foundation
Promotes the full participation of women and girls in all aspects of Hong Kong society through research, education and public awareness. The site has links to Hong Kong organizations addressing women's issues.
India
Creating Resources for Empowerment and Action (CREA)
CREA is involved in public education and advocacy on issues of human rights, sexuality, and violence against women.
The Centre for Organization Research & Education (CORE)
Based in Manipur, India, this organization works on grassroots support and advocacy for the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples and their organizations in the northeast region of India.
SEWA: Self-Employed Women's Association
Founded in 1972 as a trade union of self employed women, its goals include activities and research to ensure full employment and self-reliance of its 700,000+ members. It is concerned about the effects of globalization in the lives of women in this informal economy in urban and rural settings.
Tibetan Women's Association
An exile organization originally founded in 1959 in Tibet but based in India now, it works to raise public awareness of the abuses faced by Tibetan women in Chinese-occupied Tibet.
Centre for Social Research
Founded in 1983, this organization works at the grassroots, regional and international levels to raise women's awareness of their rights and to eliminate violence against women. Ranjana Kumari, Director, also serves as the president of Women Power Connect (WPC), India's only lobbying organization focused on gender issues, and coordinator of Joint Action Front for Women.
Japan
Asia-Japan Women's Resource Center
In Japanese and English, this organization works to eliminate the violence against women, and advocates sustainable development, as well as women's political representation. The English language feminist journal Voices from Japan is available online (2003-present) under "Publications."
National Women's Education Center (NWEC)
Established in 1977 and affiliated with Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, NWEC promotes women's education and gender equality through education and conducting specialized research and surveys with focus on women. The online NWEC Newsletter (1997-present) is available under "Publications."
Korea
Asian Pacific Women's Information Network Center (APWINC)
In Korean, the APWINC works towards enabling women in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region to use information and communication technologies to advance their status and rights in society.
Korean Women Development Institute
The KWDI was established in 1983 under the Ministry of Health and Welfare to address Korean women's issues. It carries out comprehensive research on women, promotes policies and advocates for the increase of women's participation in national development. This comprehensive site contains statistics, reports and documents on the status of women, history, and other relevant issues on women in Korea.
Malaysia
Women's Aid Organization (WAO)
Established in 1982, WAO is an independent NGO committed to eliminate violence against women.
Nepal
The Women's Foundation of Nepal
Established in 1988, this NGO is committed to empower women and to increase public awareness of opportunities for economic and social development.
Pakistan
Shirkat Gah: Women's Resource Centre
Established in 1975, it provides information, resources, and skills, as well as works to include gender and women's perspective in policies, laws and practices. The site makes available publications and links to resources.
Sustainable Development Social Institute, Human Development Research Programme, Women/Gender Issues
Under the leadership of Saba Gul Khattak, executive director, the unit provides input on gender issues for government policy. The site publishes reports and other publications on women and gender in Pakistan.
Phillipines
Development Action for Women Network
Created in 1996 to assist Filipino women migrants in Japan and their Japanese-Filipino children in the promotion and protection of their human rights and welfare. The organization's newsletter SINAG (2003-present) is available under "Publications."
GABRIELLA: National Alliance of Women's Organizations in the Philippines
The coalition consists of working women's organizations, peasants, urban poor, housewives, professionals, religious and students. It focuses on issues including the effects of militarization and women's landlessness; the IMF-World Bank and the debt crisis; denial of women's reproductive rights, prostitution and trafficking of women.
ISIS-Women's International Cross Cultural Exchange Linking Women Internationally
It is a global action oriented women's resource center that promotes justice and gender equality. ISIS was founded in 1974 by
Jane Cottingham and Marilee Karl in Geneva and moved to Manila from Rome in 1991.
Miriam College, Women & Gender Institute (WAGI)
Established in 1997, WAGI promotes women's rights and feminist scholarship. WAGI is currently serving as the secretariat for the International Gender and Trade Network-Asia, DAWN-Southeast Asia, and Southeast Asia Women's Watch. It houses the national CEDAW Watch of the Philippines and will soon host the Regional CEDAW project of UNIFEM. Josepha "Gigi" Francisco is its founding executive director.

Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE)
A volunteer organization founded in 1985, AWARE works to raise gender equity by raising awareness of men's and women's rights and responsibilities, as well as empowering women by enhancing their knowledge and skills.

Regional
ASTRA: Central and East European Women's Network for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
ASTRA advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Central and Eastern Europe. The link "Publications," points to full-text reports on sexual and reproductive rights in Central and East European countries.
Gender Network-Central and Eastern European Network for Gender Issues
As a component of the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity, Gender Network was founded in 1994 to address the gender aspect of democracy building and the status of women in countries in transition. The site has links to countries in the region, each with a summary for elections, political situation, social issues and links.
European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE)
ECRE is an umbrella organization of 72 refugee-assisting agencies in 28 countries working towards fair and humane policies for the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. The website contains ECRE's policy related documents, research papers, speeches, observations and press releases, news, and, links to other refugee sites.
Kvinna Till Kvinna
In Swedish and English. This Swedish based organization supports women in regions affected by war and conflict especially in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Georgia, and Israel/Palestine. The links "Thematic Info" and "Country Info" provides information on the status of women in each of the above countries, ranging from history, women's movement and a list of partners. Their annual report is also available online.
Women Against Violence Europe (WAVE)
WAVE is a network of organizations working against violence inflicted on women, family and children. The publication Fempower (2001- present) published twice a year is available fulltext in English and French.
Armenia
GINSC: Gender Information Network of South Caucasus
In Russian. This regional Internet portal was founded in 2000 to share information among organizations working on gender issues and women's rights in South Caucasus. Resources include reports and documents about women in politics, women in art, women and society, and women in business in Armenia, Azerbaidjan, and Georgia. Sakhi for South Asian Women
Founded in 1989 by a group of five South Asian women, the organization works to address abuses related to the violence against women and assist survivors of violence using a culturally sensitive approach and language assistance. Sister Song Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective

Stop Violence Against Women (STOPVAW)

The group Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights developed this website as a tool for the promotion of women's human rights in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Mongolia, and the U.N. Protectorate of Kosovo. It works on prevention of domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and trafficking on women.
Tewa Women United (TWU)
Established in 1989, this independent Native women-run non-profit organization located within the Northern Pueblos of New Mexico, provides support and network by offering programs and services to indigenous and non-indigenous women.
Vital Voices Global Partnership
Vital Voices invests on projects that build women's economic independence, human rights and political rights and civil leadership. It grew out of the U.S. government's successful Vital Voices Democracy Initiative, which was established after the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing to promote the advancement of women as a U.S. foreign policy goal.
