Collection Development Statement
Course Reserves

(October 25, 1991)

Course reserves refer to library materials that are gathered together temporarily and given a noncirculating or restricted circulation status to support the work of a particular class for the duration of a semester or possibly a year. The number of copies of books and photocopies to be purchased for reserve for required reading is 1 for every 20 students enrolled in the course, not to exceed 6 copies of any one title. Only one copy of "suggested" or "supplemental" readings will be placed on reserve. Required textbooks for a course will not be acquired for reserves or the general collection.

Reserve material is placed in the appropriate library on the campus where the course is taught. The instructor of the course is responsible for providing a list of such material well in advance to the circulation/reserve department of the library in which the material will be temporarily housed.

Items on the list will be searched on IRIS. Those found will be borrowed and placed on reserve at the library indicated by the instructor. This means all available copies in RUL will be used before new copies are ordered.

Reserves items will be ordered through the Acquisitions Department on a priority 1 basis. Acquisitions will note in the order record the temporary reserve location, but will designate the permanent catalog for reserve materials according to library profiles as defined in the RUL Collection Development Plan. When in doubt about the appropriate permanent location for a title, Acquisitions staff will contact selectors for guidance. As reserve materials are received in Acquisitions, they will be priority cataloged for their permanent locations, then routed directly from TAS to the reserve locations that initiated the requests.

There is a central fund to charge purchases against for all course reserves in RUL.
