Robert Sewell welcomed new CDC member Mary Beth Weber and thanked outgoing member Francoise Puniello for her service on the Council. Mary Beth distributed a document detailing the work of each section for the reorganized Cataloging and Metadata Services Department.
Mary Page distributed monthly statistics and charts for orders, receipts, and cancellations. The new approval plan profiles are working well. The acquisition of e-books is likely to increase. There are many new platforms. We should consider investigating them rather than just using Net Library. We will arrange a demonstration of E-brary in September or October; then other providers in subsequent months.
Robert Sewell reported that FY07 absorbed an $800,000 cut through cancellations, salary savings transfers to the collections budget, and one-time temporary funds. Overall we spent $8.7 million of which $7.1 million derived from State funds, and $1.6 million from non-State revenues.
The FY07 total fixed costs were $6.5 million of which $3.2 million were RU Online. We also prepaid some memberships and databases to help with the FY08 budget.
For FY08, we made an allocation for fixed costs to match last year's expenditures plus 7% to cover projected inflation.
The non-State cash balance carryover from FY07 became the FY08 allocation except in the case of central non-State funds distributed to the campuses in FY2007. All of the money in the "free balances" in these funds will be withdrawn and redistribution in this fiscal year.
Temporary funds have been received from the Center for Mid-Eastern Studies ($7,000) and Social Work ($10,000). We're seeking temporary funds from the central University administration as well. The New Jersey Knowledge Initiative has funding at least through FY08.
An "Encumbered and not paid analysis for 2007 subscriptions" was distributed.
Robert Sewell distributed and discussed "Strategic Plan Goals and Objectives for Collection Development and Management and CDC, 2007/08."
Next meeting: The next council meeting will take place on Thursday, August 30th.
