For the July meeting the CMFG traveled to the ReCAP facility in Princeton, NJ where Penny Weniger serves as Manager of the facility. The ReCAP facility is a massive library storage facility run by a consortium that is made up of Princeton University, Columbia University, and the New York Public Library.
We received a guided tour of the entire facility, including rides on the forklift (3-4 stories up) and a trip into the microfilm vault (35 degrees F) for the very brave in the group. ReCAP is an impressive facility that receives, checks, sizes, verifies, and shelves up to 8000 items per day. In addition, as the collection grows, requests for materials to be sent to one of the three institutions for patron use is growing.
The group was very impressed with the facility and thanked Penny and the rest of the ReCAP staff for an eye-opening look at the world of library storage on a large scale.
The next meeting will be August 14, 2002 - 2pm at SMLR.
