Digital Architecture and Infrastructure Working Group
2002-4 Objectives
Digital Infrastructure
Server Management Plan
Server inventory
Space planning process for digital projects
Space monitoring and allocation
Security and distributed/peered management
Compatible platform development across RUL
Minimal specifications developed for RUL purchase and server replacement plan
Establish OS and server software inventory, versioning and periodic upgrade plan
RUL offsite storage plan/systemwide contract
Staffing/training requirements for server management
Data Management
Research current storage technologies and capabilities for real-time and near-line storage
Scalable, feature-rich near-line storage system selected
Develop minimum requirements for data backup, refreshing, peering/failover for data availability and integrity checking
Platform Development/Technology Transfer
Establish a list of platforms and application software to be supported at RUL
Include both open-source and commercial sources that adhere to open standards and protocols
Include a request and reporting procedure to support new application software needed for specific projects.
Continue migration to open-source platforms/applications where feasible.
Test the migration of at least two digital databases/services developed at SCC to Systems for ongoing management.
RUL Information Security
Draft an information and networking security plan specific to RUL that is compatible with RUCS' university-wide plan.
Test the RUCS' LDAP (directory) based authentication mechanism for use at RUL.
Digital Architecture
Open Source Ingest and Export of Data
Implement OAI 2.0 at the service provide and data provider levels (OAIster) for at least one test database (NJEDL?)
Work with the Data Architecture WG on the development of standards-based databases in IMS and Dublin Core schemas
Study the SCORM protocol and Open LMS application software for creating immersive educational objects from RUL digital materials
Support for Digital Object Creation
Develop a technical metadata schema and management plan that is OAIS compatible. Investigate and evaluate METS for structured linking of technical metadata and descriptive metadata. Investigate and test ALOHA open-source software for mining technical metadata from images.
Investigate and develop a structure map (METS or METS compliant) for complex objects (e.g. objects with multiple components and hierarchies and/or relationships between components. The proposed structure map will be designed to support e-texts and e-journals initially.
Digital Architecture Platform
Actively participate in the development of a schema-independent/dynamic portal data architecture
Actively participate in any statewide initiatives to develop a common digital architecture and data model
Investigate digital architecture platforms (FEDORA, SODA, DSpace, et al) for applicability to RUL and compatibility with the schema/independent, dynamic portal infrastructure.
