Ethnographic Research Project: Charge

Via email, 12/17/08

Greetings,

By now you know about the upcoming Rutgers Libraries ethnography project, and about the formation of the Project Team. I would formally like to invite each of you to serve on the project's Core Team - this is the steering group that will be responsible for the management of the project, working closely with Dr. Todd White. There is some overlap in terms of membership between the Project and Core Teams, but this is entirely appropriate in this case (the Chair of the Web Advisory Committee and the Web master are on both teams). As well, I hope to add one more person, a representative from our User Services Council, shortly.

We hope to meet with Todd in January to begin talking about the project specifics, and I should have more details on that visit soon. I look forward to working with each of you on this exciting project!

Greetings all,

As per my email to RUL-Everyone last week, you are now aware that we will be embarking on an exciting project to examine how our users use the library, and then use that research to inform the design of an improved interface for the library's web site. The project will begin in earnest in early 2009. Dr. C. Todd White, who has worked on similar research at Rochester and Colorado, has graciously agreed to work with us on our project here, the focus of which will be the use of ethnographic research to help us better understand our users.

At the heart of the project are two cross-unit teams, made up of a variety of folks from across the libraries. This team approach is based on models used at both Colorado and Rochester libraries during their ethnographic research projects. I would like to ask your participation as a member of the Project Team. The Project Team will be the group, working closely with Dr. White, to carry out the tasks associated with the research (this might include activities like user interviews, surveying users, assisting with survey instrument design, etc.) There will also be a Core Team, which will essentially work as a steering group for the project.

On January 23, 2009, Dr. White will be visiting Rutgers to meet with both the Project and Core Teams, and we will then have a much better sense of what the research project will actually entail. I will have more details about the day's meetings shortly.

If you are *not* interested in participating, please let me know by this Friday. Otherwise, I look forward to working with you!
