Minutes of June 15, 2011 Meeting

Call to order, adoption of the agenda, approval of the minutes of the May meeting

J. Gardner called the meeting to order at 9:35 am. The agenda was adopted. The minutes of the May meeting were approved.

Report of the Faculty Coordinator

There was no news to report.

Old Business

Liaison roles for librarians (Goal #2)

The Planning & Coordinating Committee's (PlanCo) New Liaison Roles for Librarians document was distributed. Since the May meeting, three additional roles had been added to the original three:

  1. Work with teaching and research faculty and staff to integrate library expertise, resources, and services into teaching and learning at the University to improve student learning.
  2. Work with teaching and research faculty and staff to integrate library expertise, resources, and services into research at the University to improve results and solutions.
  3. Work with teaching and research faculty and staff to digitally preserve, reformat if necessary, and make accessible the results of their research in the repository (RUcore) to ensure the future preservation of institutional resources.
  4. Work with teaching and research faculty to make their research more visible.
  5. Initiate conversations, dialogues, and forums with individuals and organizations to identify common goals.
  6. Collaborate with individuals and organizations to achieve common goals.

Discussion followed on the necessary skills and training required for each role, and on examples of activities supporting each role. J. Gardner will draft another version of the list and distribute to PlanCo for comments.

Leadership Programs

J. Boyle provided the top choices for leadership programs, which were presented at the June Faculty meeting. If PlanCo members find additional leadership programs, they should contact J. Gardner. J. Gardner will add additional suggestions to the core list and pass it to incoming Faculty Coordinator J. Niessen, who will work with the process of application and selection with 2011-12 PlanCo.

New Business

There was no new business.

Report of the University Librarian

M. Gaunt had nothing additional to report. RUL is looking for a definitive answer on whether the potential legislation on residency and benefits for state workers will impact the Libraries.

Summary of meeting outcomes and future agenda items

PlanCo will meet twice during the summer, under the leadership of incoming Faculty Coordinator J. Niessen.
