STAFF RESOURCES |
There are many students majoring in science and six separate science library buildings currently serve their needs. Combining all science libraries under one roof would better serve our students and faculty. Having joint programs with UMDNJ was also mentioned.
General review of why a new science library is needed. Françoise stated she would incorporate all sections into one cohesive document to remove redundancies. She will add a line about the new building being a "Leeds certified green building."
Will add examples why it's beneficial to combine interdisciplinary research. For example it will eliminate travel between buildings and free up space for other purposes, such as Special Collections.
Françoise will confirm proposed status of the Chang Library.
Anne spoke of the need for the new building to have Seminar Rooms of varying sizes. She also mentioned that the new facility must be able to support the most recent technological advances.
Laura will add section addressing the new library as a Government Repository.
Will incorporate the term "re-centering the campus" and address the issue of whether lockers will be used and whether their contents should be visible. Also discussed was the continuing need for Grad carrels and the fact that smaller study areas are easier to maintain a quiet atmosphere.
Andy recommended that an appendix be added to the concept document, which would supply information about the square footage and number of available seats. Also suggested was to add the term "wireless" to this section.
Rebecca added a section "Library as Cultural Center" and submitted it via email on Jan. 29. It was determined that the word "courtyard" should be used instead of patio. Also mentioned was the need for a bookstore and exhibit area, which would include an aquarium.
The need for adequate parking will also be included.
