The Task Force spent the meeting hearing from Grace Agnew who did a presentation entitled: Privacy ≠ Identity. Her Power Point is posted on the Sakai site and was sent to the Task Force. Grace explained the difficulty of implementing trustworthy authentication systems in a multi-institutional environment. A system like Shibboleth is promising, but it is transaction based while the OPAC is resource based. Grace recommended that an RUL Identity Management Group be set up to review sources, people and statistics at the institutional level. Staff workstations hold a lot of identity/private information. Issues like responsible use need to be addressed and procedures documented. Tensions between security and freedom persist. While it's necessary to have some level of record to trace back abuses, particularly with 3rd party agreements, we must determine the right balance. Privacy and identity management are areas of potential collaboration with OIT.
