DATE: DECEMBER 30, 2001 TO: NATALIE BORISOVETS, MARTY KESSELMAN, JOHN MAXYMUK, RYAN WOMACK FROM: JEANNE E. BOYLE, ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR PUBLIC SERVICES AND COMMUNICATIONS RE: REAL TIME REFERENCE TASK FORCE
I am writing to thank you for agreeing to participate in planning and overseeing a real time reference pilot for the coming spring semester. The Public Services Council has discussed the options for introducing a real time reference service at Rutgers and has determined that a pilot project should be the first step.
Thank you, Marty and Natalie, for agreeing to co-chair the pilot project. The pilot project should build on the real time reference report from the New Brunswick Libraries and be mindful of plans being made by VALE. Marty's chairing of the New Brunswick study and Natalie's coordination of Ask a Librarian and representation of Rutgers to the VALE planning group will be important to your work. You may wish to recruit additional reference librarians to participate in the pilot.
At the conclusion of the pilot, an evaluation report should be submitted to the Public Services Council. While the pilot project will test the service on a small scale, you will have to consider in your evaluation how it will scale for use throughout our library system. The Council will also be interested in knowing what needs a real time reference service is most suited to filling, how the service will fit within our existing suite of services, to whom it would be offered, who would participate, and how it might be managed. User comment would be valuable to capture and include, and you should coordinate gathering user information with the assessment committee. Lastly, you should recommend next steps, including timing and costs.
Thank you, again, for agreeing to participate. I am including for use as background for your discussions a vision statement about reference that the Council helped me draft last year. Please let me know at any time if there is any assistance I can give.
