The group discussed the use of the orientation packets for new student employees. All agreed that the packets were a success and improved training of new student staff. Rose announced that the Student Guide and all of the contents of the packet will eventually be available online so it can be easily printed and used whenever needed.
The group discussed the use of the Student Guide in paper copy vs. online format. The larger units have enough computers available to do training online but most of the branch libraries and smaller units do not have extra computers to use during student orientation and would prefer to have the contents of the Student Guide and Orientation Packet in paper format.

Rose will register a WebCT page for the department before the next meeting. Rose asked the group for suggestions on what information they would like to see on the main page. Some ideas were Reference Hours for others libraries, Student Guide and orientation information, building hours and directions to other libraries, public safety information, pay schedules and links to other unit WebCT or URL’s for more specific unit information. Rose asked Megan D. to help with the initial design and maintenance of the new WebCT page.
Rose passed around a brochure that was found on the ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu website. The brochure details campus and off campus safety tips for students and also indicates current shuttle and bus services for evening and over night hours for each campus. Rose suggested this be posted where student employees can easily refer to its contents.
Marc informed the group he was having a problem at LSM where a patron was frequently asking for information on a female work-study student. Rose informed the group she has had similar problems at Alex. Remind staff and other student staff working on the desk to never disclose anyone’s work schedule. If a student staff feels uncomfortable working on a service desk because of a “frequent visitor” have them alert a full time staff person immediately.
