Minutes of November 20, 2008 Meeting

The USC joined the LRC via videoconferencing in the University Librarian's Conference Room for agenda items #4 and #5.

1. Preliminaries

Review and approval of minutes from Oct. 23, 2008 meeting.

2. AUL Reports and Questions

Report of F. Puniello:

• Four group study rooms will soon be built in Alexander Library.
• Alexander and Kilmer Library will be getting new carpeting in May in public areas. During this time, the reference collection and card catalog in Alexander will be shifted, and shelving in Kilmer will be moved.

Report of V. Dent (forwarded prior to the meeting via email):

• V. Dent, Jeris Cassel, and Myoung Wilson will participate in a group that will brainstorm for a new program initiative at SCILS, "Competencies for the Digital Age."
• Eileen Stec and Jeris Cassel initiated a meeting with directors from the Writing Program to discuss models to embed information literacy into the writing curriculum.
• On Nov. 13, Dr. Todd White gave a presentation and spoke with the libraries about ethnography and its uses within a library setting. A similar presentation may be accessed at: https://urresearch.rochester.edu/retrieve/13111/CSUMarch12.pdf Next steps will be a feasibility review, including cost, and the formation of Core and Project Teams.
• The libraries continue to collaborate with the Honors Program and the Office of Undergraduate Education about incorporating information literacy/learning objects into the undergraduate curriculum.

3. Recommendations from the Instructional Services Committee (Jeris Cassel)

J. Cassel distributed "Chronology of RUL Instruction Activities," a document outlining instruction activities at RUL from 1981 through the present.

Cassel outlined a proposal for the ISC to be reorganized as follows:

• That the committee become an open forum for the libraries
• That limited term, ad hoc working groups be appointed by V. Dent as needed to work on specific instructional initiative tasks or projects

T. Kuchi commented on the need for communication between the ISC and the rest of RUL during this transition.

4. RUCore - Facilitation and Engagement (Rhonda Marker and Jim Niessen), shared discussion with the Library Resources Council

R. Marker and J. Niessen gave an overview of the online form used to submit an article to RUCore. J. Niessen distributed a document, "Submitting your Article to RUCore: a Decision Tree."

Marker and Niessen announced that RUCore is ready to accept articles, dissertations and theses, scholarly works of enduring value (including sound files, photographs, text files, and moving image files). E-journal development is on the list of goals, and science data sets are a long term goal. Priorities for RUCore are Rutgers material.

Marker outlined the use of custom portals, by which individuals or departments can move all the documents they have loaded to RUCore onto their own website, with RUCore still hosting the information. Items available in RUCore are also available in Google. Availability in Google Scholar is being pursued.

5. ILL and Consortial Agreements Update (Judy Gardner)

J. Gardner gave a presentation on resource sharing statistics. This included statistics on the Rutgers Delivery Service, lending via JerseyCat and OCLC, EZ-Borrow, SHARES, Rapid ILL, and Interlibrary Loan.

6. Announcements, Concerns, and Issues

N. Borisovets announced that IPAC is developing a new books page. The page will be updated monthly and will highlight books that have recently been added to IRIS. The page will be broken down by subject area, and will include links to IRIS records for the new books.

C. Sterback gave a reminder about the OLE webcast in the SCC at 3:00, Nov. 20th. In December, RUL will be hosting two sets of two-day workshops on OLE. On January 2, 2009, IRIS will be updated.

J. Cassel announced the upcoming program, "Reflecting on Library Instruction," sponsored by the Instructional Services Committee. The program will be held December 2, 2008, from 1:00-3:00 p.m., in the Alexander Library. Sara Harrington will be the featured speaker, and will present on "The Teacher-Librarian: Reflections from ACRL Immersion."

7. Next Meeting and Agenda Items

The next meeting of the User Services Council will be Thursday, December 18th and 9:30 a.m. Agenda items include:

• Continued discussion of instruction
• Role of USC in Ethnography Research Project (V. Dent)
• Discussion on Marketing/PR Team Goals and Activities (Harry Glazer/Rose Barbalace)
