Minutes of September 16, 2009 Meeting
- Present:
- Joe Abraham (recorder), Stephanie Bartz, Melissa Gasparotto, Tom Glynn (chair), Qian Hu, Pam Johnson, Marty Kesselman, Jackie Mardikian, Françoise Puniello (guest), Gene Springs, Eileen Stec, Tao Yang
- Tom Glynn, chair, asked that minutes be recorded on a rotating basis. Rotation will be
alphabetical by last name, starting with Joe Abraham
- The group welcomes the Information and Computing Specialists (ICS) to this and subsequent
meetings
- Parents' program during next year's new student orientation
- As parents accompany new students during orientation, the new student orientation program will include programming for parents next year
- Libraries asked to participate
- Douglass has participated in similar programming in the past
- DECISION: The group is interested in pursuing this further
- Françoise Puniello, Tom Glynn, and Jackie Mardikian will speak to Lee Schneider about logistics
- Migrating NBISG pages from nbl.rutgers.edu to the RUL facstaff pages
- The group will evaluate the current content of the NBISG pages and determine whether content should be migrated, archived, or discarded
- Reference Manual
- http://nbl.rutgers.edu/nbl_info_services/isg_documents/nbrefmanual.html
- Generally felt that this is document not used
- Members feel the individual libraries are too unique to generalize pertinent information into a manual
- Difficult to keep up-to-date in the current static format
- DECISION: Archive; look into new ways to distribute and update the information contained in the manual
- Common Knowledge Database (CKDB)
- Still utilized by some, but has mostly fallen out of use
- New entries and updates are mediated
- Mediated setup may discourage participation
- Possible implementation of content management system to allow ease of contribution
- If moving to a new system, ease of migrating existing data must be considered, as well as the capability of the new system to allow unmediated entry and tagging
- DECISION: As the CKDB is meant to serve as a system-wide FAQ and Rolodex, Tom Glynn will ask the User Services Council if they would like to take the project
- NBL Directory
- http://nbl.rutgers.edu/nbl_directory/
- Has not been updated in a while, and is so out-of-date in some areas that it serves as misinformation
- Pages are difficult to update
- DECISION: Discard; Tom Glynn will ask Judy Gardner if the shelf maps already kept by Access Services can be made available to the public on the main library website
- TABLED: New formats for reference services
- Tabled due to time; will be discussed at the next meeting
- PC Reservation
- LSM will be instituting PC Reservation
- A new class of guest account was created for UMDNJ users in order to give them 22 hours of access per day, as our libraries serve as their primary libraries
- Access Services and Reference Team at LSM will work out the UMDNJ verification and account creation process and pass that information to other PC Reservation participating libraries
- DECISION: Tom Glynn will request from Anne Butman that another class of guest account be created to allow two hours of access to alumni and community borrowers (those who pay for lending privileges)
- NEXT MEETING: October 14, 2009 at 3PM in the SCC Seminar Room
