New Brunswick Libraries Faculty Meeting: Minutes of the April 8, 2011 Meeting

1. The meeting agenda was approved.

2. The minutes of the February meeting were approved.

3. AUL/RIS Report

The RIS Mid-year report is to be considered the AUL/RIS report.

4. NBLF input for AUL/RIS search.

The AUL/RIS position is posted. The search Committee members are Tom Izbicki (chair), Judy Gardner, Melissa Gasparotto, Karen Hartman, Rebecca Gardner, Bobby Tipton, Isaiah Beard, and Anne Coiro (English Dept. faculty) . Numerous RUL positions are now being recruited simultaneously (3 new RUL system wide positions, Associate Director at Dana, many staff lines) offering an exciting and dynamic environment for potential candidates.

Tom I. solicited input from the group regarding concerns, clarifications, and topics of interest to pose/ask/inform the candidates during their interview and visit on campus. Recommendations are as follows:

Express existing challenges, nuances and the balance between the two sets of responsibilities: system wide and NBL.
Offer a clear definition of RIS.
Clarify relationship of this position with Robeson and Dana directors.
Add one Camden representative to the search committee.
Attune to the candidate's portfolio on instructional and research experiences and leadership style.
Provide the candidates the RUL fact sheet.
Express the significance of NB as the RU flag ship campus and the role of the AUL/RIS vis a vis campus constituents.
On the topic of an associate/deputy AUL/RIS, TI indicated that it will be up to the AUL/RIS to decide.
Have more than one candidate as finalists to select from.

Tom I. also invited suggestions for topics for candidates' presentation. The ideas offered are:

Organizational cultures in multi-library systems.
Future directions of reference and instruction.
General direction of academic libraries. A relatively open ended theme allowing the candidate a wide range of options.
If possible, avoid themes expressing trends, as they might be ephemeral.
Focus on academic and research libraries.

5. NBLF input for strategic plan

During its goals discussion in September, NBLF acknowledged the fact that the current strategic plan is about to expire. It was suggested that NBLF participate, as appropriate, in the process for creating the next three year plan. Rebecca, as NBLF chair, will touch base with Jeanne to determine whether there is a role for NBLF in the planning process.

6. Data presentation

Ryan asked the liaisons for names of academic faculty who might be interested in collaboration regarding data management and collaboration.

7. Announcements and Updates

The attendees of the ACRL Conference in Philadelphia have access to the ACRL Virtual conference. Interested librarians to contact Gene Springs for password.
On Rutgers Day Sat 4/30, RUL will have activities at ART and ALEX.
PC Reservation contract renewal is due in fall 2011.
Joe Abraham created an online reference statistics gathering site. The prototype will be discussed.
