Information Literacy: A Neglected Core Competency
Researchers at the Information School at the University of Washington released an important and thought-provoking report in late 2009: Lessons Learned: How College Students Seek Information in the Digital Age. The study confirms and expands on the results of other reports. Its particular value is the size of the population studied, the diversity of institutions represented, and the use of both a survey and follow-up interviews for data collection.

The OIRAP website provides data about institutional characteristics, including the Rutgers "Fact Book" and "Dashboard Indicators," and a variety of reports and surveys about Rutgers.

Academic Library Statistics (Association of College and Research Libraries) Data is given for universities awarding associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees. Data categories are for collections expenditures, staffing, degrees, faculty, enrollment, etc. An interesting data category is for digitization activities.

"ARL Statistics is a series of annual publications that describe the collections, expenditures, staffing, and service activities for ARL member libraries." Data is given by institution and in the aggregate. An online interactive edition that allows comparisons among institutions or over a period of years is available.

Admissions and Enrollment Management
This publication identifies good practices in graduate admissions and graduate enrollment management. Topics addressed include organizational structures and university-wide policies and procedures, departmental guidelines, and legal and financial issues. This 2012 revision includes new discussion of: "enrollment management" as opposed to a narrow "admissions" approach, international student recruiting, and recent changes affecting affirmative action/diversity efforts.
Annual Ranking of World Universities
This annual ranking was developed to find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms of academic or research performance. It has been published every year since 2003, and all years are available from this website. Data is published on the top 500 universities. A review is available here. In 2010, Rutgers ranked 54th.
America's Best Colleges (U.S. News & World Report)
U.S. News & World Report" carries out this annual survey to help college-bound students choose the right college. Data includes information on retention and graduation rates, class size, selectivity of students admitted, and finances. The peer assessment score has made the survey controversial in recent years.
America's Best Graduate Schools (U.S. News & World Report)
Data from more than 12,000 graduate programs were collected for the 2009 rankings. The report is arranged by discipline, and the methodologies used vary by discipline group. Rutgers is ranked in the library sciences, criminology, English, and history groups.
Association of American Universities Data Exchange
The Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE) is a public service organization whose purpose is to improve the quality and usability of information about higher education." Members are AAU institutions. The AAUDE website provides links to studies by higher education organizations, universities, and the commercial sector.

NCHEMS Information Center for State Higher Education Policymaking and Analysis (National Center for Higher Education Management Systems)
NCHEMS gives comparative data for states and counties and provides studies on special topics, race/ethnicity, and policy questions. It is possible to generate your own data and maps.
Projections of Education Statistics to 2016 (NCES)
Provides projections of enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures at the national, regional, and state levels for elementary and secondary schools and enrollment and degrees conferred at the national level for degree-granting institutions.
Top American Research Universities: 2010 Annual Report (The Center for Measuring University Performance)
The top 25, 50, and 200 research universities are identified and ranked by nine performance measures. Additional tables rank public and private research universities separately. Data for additional measures are compiled for institutions with substantial federal research expenditures. All data used is from public sources. In the 2010 report, Rutgers ranked in the top 25 nationally on at least one of the nine measures and in the top 25 among all public universities on at least one of the nine measures.
Top Research Universities Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (Chronicle of Higher Education)
This index examines faculty members who are listed on a Ph.D. program's websites. The productivity of each faculty member is judged on as many as five factors, depending on the most important variables in the given discipline: books published, journal publications, citations of journal articles, federal-grant dollars awarded, and honors and awards. For each discipline, weights are assigned to each variable. The score given allows the performance of programs to be compared across disciplines.
AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey (Association of University Technology Managers) "The AUTM Licensing Survey Summary is a standard for technology transfer professionals and public sector individuals that desire data on academic intellectual property licensing activities in the U.S. and Canada." The text describes national activity while the appendix gives data by institution for licensing FTE, research expenditures, licenses executed and active, invention disclosures, patents issued and patent applications, and income. Data for Rutgers is included.
Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC))
Published twice each year in January and June since 2004, the various rankings are based on the Web presence of the institutions included. "Web presence measures the activity and visibility of the institutions and it is a good indicator of impact and prestige of universities. Rank summarizes the global performance of the University, provides information for candidate students and scholars, and reflects the commitment to the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Rutgers world rank is 34.
The QS World University Rankings (Times Higher Education Supplement)
The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six indicators: academic peer review, employer review, faculty student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty, and international students.

Included are statistics for public payroll, retirees, federal earmarks, election records, property sales, crime reports, SAT results, and much more.

MINES for Libraries
"Measuring the Impact of Networked Electronic Services (MINES) is an online, transaction-based survey that collects data on the purpose of use of electronic resources and the demographics of users". The survey instrument is under development by the Association of Research Libraries, and the Rutgers University Libraries have agreed to collaborate on developing its use with EZproxy.
