Dealing with the recent onslaught of viruses and worms has kept Systems very busy. The newest Windows patches will be installed next week. All swaps of new machines are completed, and the recycling of the older machines will begin in a week or so. All public and classroom pcs have been updated with the new image. The second stage of PC Plan purchases has been postponed due to budgetary constraints. All servers have been updated to Novell Netware 6 service pack 3. MacAfee NetShield has been updated on all as well. The servers all have reconditioned batteries.
John presented the Group's revision of the Current Support document to Technical Services Council for a second time, and they responded with a few more suggestions which were discussed at PCWG. John will send the updated page to Sam for posting. John will also update the PCWG Members page.
We discussed the difficulties people have in setting up remote access.
The library system is creating a security plan for our computer infrastructure. PCWG has been asked to develop a policy on password use, a statement on backup and recovery, and an exit procedure for librarians and staff. Next month the Group will discuss password policy in the context of the RUCS policy. We will also discuss backup using Anne Butman's existing documentation. Finally, Nick will draft an exit procedure so we can discuss that as well.
Please remember to update the inventory of local staff machines.
Au has a supply of Dell wireless cards for desktops for sale for $50 on a Purchase Order.
Next month the group will discuss who will chair PCWG.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 21. As usual, on Tuesday, 10AM in the TSB Conference Room.
