"Art and Jazz: A Tribute to Ed Berger" Exhibit Opening at Dana Library

May 19, 2017
artwork featuring Ed Berger

On May 24, 2017, Dana Library will celebrate the opening of the exhibition, “Art and Jazz: A Tribute to Ed Berger,” at an afternoon reception taking place in the Dana Room from 3 to 6 p.m. Curated by Joanne Leone, the exhibition features the creative works of over 50 students at Arts High School in Newark. The Arts High Jazz Band will perform at the reception from 4 to 4:30 p.m.. Robert Richardson, visual arts faculty member at Arts High School, has been working with Leone to coordinate the exhibition and the opening reception.

For the past three months, the students have been meeting with Leone, a former art teacher in the Newark Public Schools, to learn how to express the experience of listening to jazz in their art. Leone had been planning the exhibition with Ed Berger, former Institute of Jazz Studies associate director and special projects librarian, when he passed away suddenly earlier this year. She carried on with their plans and the exhibition and event programming are now regarded as tributes to Ed. The students’ work will be displayed along with artwork from professional artists like Karen Guancione, Joanne Leone, Rocco Scary, Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts, and John Watts, who have been an integral part of Dana’s arts programming over the past 20 years and knew Ed Berger.

The exhibition will remain in the Gallery through August 26, 2017 with selected works remaining on view in the Dana Room through the fall.
