On Exhibit at Robeson Library: Rutgers–Camden: A Campus in Flux
Rutgers–Camden: A Campus in Flux is now on display at Paul Robeson Library through August 30, 2019.
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, consists of three regional campuses. The New Brunswick campus is the largest of the trifecta, with over 50,000 enrolled students; in Newark, over 13,000 individuals study at the Rutgers campus. Our Camden campus is the smallest of the three, with a student population of approximately 7,000. Despite our compact campus, those who attend and work at Rutgers–Camden have made sure that the school is always growing and developing in various ways.
Indeed, Rutgers–Camden’s history is, in itself, constantly changing—the history of the university is made up of the accomplishments, opinions, creations, and interests of its students and faculty, the population of which is constantly in flux. Classes graduate, and new students arrive to take their place, armed with their own ideas and passions, as well as the influence of the societal climate that surrounds them. Just as popular culture ebbs and flows, so does the culture of a college campus; Rutgers–Camden’s history follows the trends and moods of those who make up its population.
Displayed in the exhibit is a history of Rutgers–Camden seen through the eyes of its students. Academics, community involvement, sports, and campus events: through the mediums exemplified here, the students of Rutgers–Camden have continued to leave their mark on the campus—just as the university itself has continued to leave its own imprint on the lives of those who have called this place “home.” The artifacts of Rutgers–Camden material culture presented in this exhibit serve as evidence of this relationship—evidence of a campus in flux.
