Libraries Name Judith Cohn Assistant Vice President for Information Services and Director of Health Sciences Libraries

October 22, 2015
Judy Cohn

In her new role, Judy will continue to direct the Health Sciences Libraries while playing an expanded role in system-wide leadership for the Libraries.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Judith Cohn to Assistant Vice President for Information Services and Director of Health Sciences Libraries.  In her new capacity, Judy will continue to ensure that the Health Sciences Libraries meet the needs of the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences community while playing an expanded role in system-wide leadership for the Rutgers University Libraries.

A steadfast and enthusiastic leader, Judy brings exceptional talent and a wealth of administrative experience to this position.  She served as Associate Vice President for Scholarly Information and University Librarian for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) from 2002 until its integration with Rutgers in 2013, after serving in various positions of increasing responsibility there since 1977.  Among her many notable accomplishments at UMDNJ, she led several major library renovations, including the transformation of the Smith Library, and oversaw the growth of the library on the Stratford campus.

An exceedingly gifted fundraiser, Judy has secured grants from the National Library of Medicine, the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, and the New Jersey State Library to fund major automation projects as well as health literacy and consumer health initiatives.  As Chair of the Virtual Academic Library Environment (VALE) Executive Committee from 2003-2007, she collaborated with NJ State Library to secure state funding to launch the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative, which provided a fully subsidized suite of academic databases to VALE libraries.

Dedicated to service and education in medical librarianship, over the course of her career Judy has published a number of articles, presented at both the national and regional level, and led courses at Rutgers School of Communication and Information.  Active in numerous professional organizations, she has served on the Executive Board of LYRASIS and as President of the Health Sciences Library Association of New Jersey (HSLANJ).  Most recently, Judy served as Chair of the Future Leadership Committee and its attendant development program for the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries.

Judy received the Health Sciences Librarian of the Year award from HSLANJ in 2004 and the Distinguished Service Award from the UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions in 2012.
