Protecting Patron Data: Privacy and Information Security in the Libraries

  • Associate University Librarian Jeanne Boyle will review the policies in place that guide all relevant actions at Rutgers University Libraries.
  • Judy Cohn, the Director of the Health Sciences Libraries will speak about the special needs related to patient data and other health-specific information that cross their computers.
  • Judy Gardner, Head of Access Services will explain how circulation and patron data can be sensitive and what is being done to protect it.
  • Ed Smith, the Libraries’ HIPAA-certified Unit Computing Manager, will describe what information technology solutions are put in place to fulfill the legal and policy requirements.
  • Vladimir Gabrielescu, Email Systems Administrator at OIT, will demonstrate what special procedures email messaging is subjected to when it is about confidential information.

The discussion will be moderated by Tibor Purger, director of the Libraries' Integrated Information Services (IIS) department.

This panel discussion, offered by IIS to coincide with Information Security Month, is open to the entire Rutgers community and the general public.
