BioMed Central is an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate open access to peer-reviewed biomedical research. All original research articles published by BioMed Central are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication.
There are links for both Support and Help in the footer of BioMed Central. The open-access version, available to the public without a membership, provides full access to articles and journals, but is somewhat less flexible and with fewer “bells and whistles” used for searching directly. It provides more of a b4rowse mode of retrieval. See also User Tools and Features section.
For help using these indexes see: How do I find an article on my topic?
User tools and features
The main content repositories are “Journals,” “Articles,” and “Gateways.” As of this writing, Journals represents a list of nearly 250 journal titles arrayed in an alphabetic list or by subject. Contents of each title may be viewed with a click. Articles are sorted into a number of options: All articles; Most popular; Supplements; My latest articles; and, Article collections. Gateways provide two choices: by broad subject category or by regional category (China, Japan, or the Developing World).
The database has a simple search textbox located in the upper right portion of the home page, as well as a link to an advanced search located directly below. The advanced search box allows for more flexibility, as users can direct fields to be searched, e.g. title, abstract, via drop-down menu choice. Boolean searches may also be performed. It is possible to refine search results and users are presented with a button which presents options for saving and downloading citations.
Users are encouraged to register and set up a profile. This allows frequent searchers to create saved search strategies which may be re-executed, as well as have content pushed via e-mail.
