Libraries Introduce Text Message Notification Service

Rutgers University Libraries are committed to providing users convenient and timely access to important information regarding their library accounts.  Accordingly, the Libraries are pleased to announce our text message notification system, the latest enhancement to our increasingly robust suite of mobile library services.

This service is offered to all patrons, including students, faculty, and staff, whose devices are able to receive Short Messaging Service (SMS) text messages. It is a value-added, opt-in service and will not supplant the current email notification system.

Currently, two different types of notifications will be sent to users who opt into the service:

  • Holds Available for pickup, initial notification and three-day courtesy reminder
  • Recalls to be returned, initial notification and three-day courtesy reminder

The text messages sent by the system will specify the type of notification (i.e. Hold Available or Recall) the book’s title and, if applicable, the pickup library.  For more detailed information, users can consult the standard email notifications that they will continue to receive.

In order to register for the service, users should log into their My Library Account page, accessible by clicking the link at the top left of any of the Libraries’ webpages.  From there, they should select Text Message Options and complete the form with their cell phone number and cellular service provider.  After accepting the terms and conditions, they will see a confirmation message and be eligible to receive text message notifications within 72 hours.  Users may also return to the options page at any time to change their phone number, update their carrier information, or opt out of the service.

Users who encounter any issues in registering for or using the service are encouraged to first consult the notification system’s How Do I?... page for a list of frequently asked questions.  If the problem persists or questions remain, they may send an inquiry using our Ask A Librarian feature.
