Statement from the Interim University Librarian

February 9, 2015

Policy Update:  Please note that as of Friday, February 6, identification is required for entrance into Dana Library.

Members of the Rutgers community:

This morning, in the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University–Newark, an incident occurred in which an undergraduate student was assaulted by an individual wielding a sharp object.  The student sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, where she was met by Rutgers–Newark leadership and her family.

The assailant, who is not a member of the Rutgers–Newark community, was apprehended by the Rutgers University Police Department and taken into custody.   RUPD is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Dana Library has resumed normal operations.  Be assured that our security measures will be reviewed in light of this incident to ensure that all Rutgers University Libraries locations remain safe and secure places for all of our patrons.

Our thoughts are with the entire Rutgers–Newark community, especially the student and her family.
