Why have copyright issues suddenly assumed such importance in academe, and
why should faculty members feel compelled to become involved in discussion of
these issues? On what areas of a faculty member's life will these issues have impact?
What current legislation will directly affect the use of copyrighted materials for
research and instruction? Is fair use being eliminated by licensing agreements for
electronic information? Will facts become copyrightable?
How can the varied interests - of the institution, faculty, students, staff, publishers, and others - in the ownership and use of intellectual property be reconciled? How are other universities handling institutional copyright policies? What kinds of structures would be useful to advise faculty on intellectual property/copyright issues? These topics and others will provide an update for the Rutgers community on important copyright issues and provide a forum for discussion in preparation for a review of the university's copyright policy.
