Serials Forum

Prior to the beginning of the regular meeting business, Bob Sewell, Gracemary Smulewitz, Karen Hartman, and Ryan Womack shared what they learned from analyzing serials and serials packages. Two trends, the acquisition of independent journals by commercial or large academic publishers and the consolidation of online journals into packages, made the most dramatic change in serials over the last decade. Between 70-80% of the total collections budget and 98% of the state budget is expended on serials. Given Gov. Christie's budget messages, RUL will have to reduce the budget by $800,000. NJKI databases except Business Source Premier will go. Previously, selectors had more control in managing titles from individual fund codes. With bundled packages, changes have to be negotiated on a group level and are based on complex publisher contracts. To help selectors regain some control over titles in their areas, DTS is designing a database that includes information about subscribed serial print and online titles with fund codes, price, provider, and usage statistics. Individual selectors will have more decision making power, but the implementation of decisions must be a collaborative process. This is essential to make the most effective use of our resources. All presentation materials will be available on all T: drives.

At the conclusion of the forum, the Ryan called the regular NBCG meeting to order.

He reported a significant progress in spending and will send out the budget report via email.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the March meeting will be approved via email.

Liaison Relationship Working Group Report (Melissa Gasparotto)

Selectors are to review file of databases available on the Alex T: drive under NBCG prior to the next meeting. Click on Selectors Databases. Allow the security warning. Put changes and notes in the last column. Each database must have a selector's name for weeding and selecting purposes. Be sure to save file before closing.

Cinema Studies Proposal (Jane Sloan)

Jane proposed that approval books for Cinema Studies be sent to Douglass and that the fund code be redirected from Alexander to Douglass. Given there were no objections to the proposal, Jane will move forward and will work with appropriate selectors. Jane agreed to write up a concept document s so that the proposal can be shared with those not present at the meeting.

Prior to adjournment, Mary reminded everyone of the celebration at 3:00 in her office in honor of Tom Izbicki and Laura Mullen receiving tenure. The announcement of the tenure decision was received and announced just prior to the Serials Forum.
