Minutes of October 18, 2005 Meeting

A Butman, N. Gonzaga, P. Johnson, K. McGuire and via teleconference S. Bartz, M. Belasco, K. Kuehl, S. Lee, J. Maxymuk and A. Ruggiero.

1. Systems Update

The recent worm attack kept Systems busy in the past week. The virus protection software on most of the public machines worked well, but not all machines had the most recent virus updates. Do not turn off public machines on Tuesday nights, regardless of weather or other conditions, so the weekly updates can run.

Requests for changes to the public machine image need to be submitted to Anne B. by November 15 for the Spring update. In that reimage, Netscape either will disappear or will be deemphasized on the screen. It will be replaced by Firefox.

The new 4.1.1 version of Ariel will be installed by the next PCWG meeting.

Systems also will complete the third-tier pc swaps by the next meeting.

2. Supported Hardware and Software Lists

We went over the lists and itemized several additions and deletions. In addition, we decided to replace the list of PC Coordinators on this page with a link to our Best Practices page that lists the coordinators. Two other recommended overall changes to the document were to remove version numbers from listed software and to add a list of sub- topics to the top of the page to aid navigation. Anne B. will pass the recommended changes on to Sam McDonald for updating.

3. Best Practices page updates

By our next meeting, all authors of Best Practices' pages should look over their pages to see if they need updating. Updated pages should be posted to the PCWG list before the meeting. We also agreed that we should add a Best Practices' link to OIT's Acceptable Use Policy.

4. New/Old Business

Mary reported problems trying to access RCI email from MyRutgers.

Kevin pointed out that Firefox should be added to Reference and Circulation desk machines.

Stephanie added that some laptops are in need of updating.

In November, teleconference endpoints will be moving to separate VLANs, and IP addresses will change. Anne emphasized that she will provide ample notice on these changes. With the move, teleconferences should experience less interference and better connectivity while allowing for the easier identification of problems.

Nick noted that Douglass has a new teleconference set up and demonstrated TSB's new document camera that can be used with teleconference equipment.

4. Future Meeting Dates

The next meetings are scheduled for November 15 and December 21. As usual, on Tuesday, 10AM in the TSB Conference Room.
