Association History

The North Jersey National Medical Association (NJNMA) was founded in 1895 by Drs. Roman and Van Dyke after repeated attempts by New Jersey African-American physicians to join the American Medical Association. The NJNMA also has been know as the New Jersey State Medical Association (ca. 1940s), the North Jersey Medical Association, and the North Jersey Medical Society.

The NJNMA was chartered in 1911 and continues to the present. The Association represents the entire state with statewide membership. A South Jersey National Medical Association was also established but has not yet been chartered.

The NJNMA business address is 280 South Harrison Street, East Orange, NJ 07018. The Association meets monthly, except in July and August, as does the board of trustees. Meetings often are scientific in nature, with a lecture by a visiting lecturer or member. Meetings are sponsored by a local pharmaceutical company.

The NJNMA has a very active auxiliary that now includes all spouses. Each year the auxiliary awards scholarships to college-bound students interested in science in public schools in Newark, Orange, and East Orange. (From notes taken by Barbara Smith Irwin.)
