New Jersey Medical Reporter and Transactions of the Medical Society of New Jersey, 1848-1854

Publications of the Medical Society of New Jersey

Part I: New Jersey Medical Reporter and Transactions of the Medical Society of New Jersey, 1848-1854

About the New Jersey Medical Reporter:

The New Jersey Medical Reporter was founded in 1847 by Dr. Joseph Parrish, and was published in Burlington, N.J. from 1847 to 1857. Historian of medicine David Cowen considered the Reporter to be “the first professional journal of substance in New Jersey.”

Although not officially published by the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Reporter “practically became the journal of the Society” (Transactions of the Medical Society of New Jersey, 1895, p. 145). The Reporter printed transactions, addresses, and reports from New Jersey’s state and district medical societies between 1847 and 1859, when the Society began publishing its annual Transactions. In January 1856, the New Jersey Medical Reporter changed its name to The Medical and Surgical Reporter. In January 1858, the journal’s operations moved to Philadelphia, and continued publication through 1898.

Physical copies of these volumes are held by UMDNJ – Special Collections. The embedded digital files were taken from the Medical Heritage Library.
