#SpecialCollectionsSunday in June is all about summer! Here we have a quintessentially summer photo of Fats Waller in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, in 1941 from the Ed Kirkeby Collection at the @runewark Institute of Jazz Studies.

Fats Waller had long been celebrated for extravagant talents as a jazz pianist, composer, and all-around entertainer by the time he and his band landed in Old Orchard Beach in 1941. They held forth at the dance hall built in 1898 at the historic pier which could accommodate 5,000 dancers. If Waller, who died in December 1943, were to walk the earth today, he would find the pier a going concern. He might even be able to buy a cone of @kohrscustard which opened its first store in Fairfield, New Jersey in 1919, and remains in business.
