Minutes of September 10, 2002 Meeting

Jazmine Faherty, Donna Kessler, Kristen St. John, Marilyn Tankiewicz, Sandra Troy (chair and recorder), Ann Watkins, and Kelly Worth attended the September 10, 2002, meeting of the Libraries Health and Safety Committee in the Special Collections Room, LSM; Rosalba Barbalace and Libby Hart were absent.

The Committee reviewed the emergency drills held in August on the New Brunswick Campuses and in Newark. In preparation for the drills, the Committee met frequently over the summer and participated in walkabouts of the library buildings. Kelly Worth coordinated dates in New Brunswick with University Police Officer, Swanetta Pitt and drills were held as follows:

Art Library - 8/15/02
Kilmer - 8/16/02
TAS - 8/20/02
LSM - 8/22/02
Dana - 8/23/02
Douglass - 8/27/02
Alexander - 8/28/02

The drills were excellent practice and preparation for both the university police, emergency services and the Libraries employees and patrons. They served to raise consciousness and awareness about appropriate response and conduct during emergencies. As a result of the drills, we are recommending that a representative from the Annex join the Health & Safety Committee. We are also looking into use of cell phones in emergency situations. Jazmine Faherty will add something to the emergency manual on their use.

The police suggested that the key administrator responsible for meeting the police in a emergency at the front entrance maintain a red folder labeled emergency containing building lists of personnel, floor plans, the bomb questionnaire page from the emergency manual, and a pad/pencil.

We are preparing a letter of thanks to the University Police and Donna Kessler will draft a letter for our next meeting.

For this fiscal year, 2002/2003, the Committee will continue working on updating the emergency manuals, improving the emergency drills, and providing CPR classes for employees, especially new employees. To date, we are expecting that an emergency drill will take place in Camden and plan to arrange another round of drills for all campuses. The Committee supports offering CPR classes for new employees and will be arranging classes for Dana and Robeson employees.

The next meeting of the Libraries Health and Safety Committee will be at noon on Thursday, October 10, 2002 at LSM.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Troy
