The Rutgers University Archives were established 50 years ago to preserve the rich and diverse history of the eighth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Officially founded on February 14, 1975, the University Archives are now an integral part of Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries. Included in the archives are records, publications and yearbooks, photographs, and memorabilia that document all aspects of the Rutgers community and are available to any researchers who are interested in the university’s history.

This year’s Louis Faugères Bishop III lecture celebrates this milestone with a panel of authors who have used the Rutgers University Archives in their research. These panelists will discuss their scholarship, the importance of archives, the history of higher education, our larger New Jersey community, and American culture and society writ large:

  • Beatrice Adams, Princeton University, co-author of Scarlet and Black Volumes 1-3
  • Thomas W. Gross, author of Free Spirit, a biography of his father, Mason Welch Gross
  • David Listokin, Distinguished Professor, Center for Urban Policy Research, and co-author of Rutgers Then and Now—Two Centuries of Campus Development: A Historic and Photographic Odyssey
  • Carol McCarty, Rutgers University–New Brunswick NAGPRA Director on provenance and historical projects related to Geology Museum collections and cultural heritage artifacts across Rutgers
  • Fernanda Perrone and Kayo Denda, Rutgers librarians and co-authors with Mary Hawkesworth of The Douglass Century

The program will be held on Thursday, December 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm on the fourth floor of Alexander Library. Attendees who have used the archives are welcome to highlight their own research during the question-and-answer period. A reception will follow the formal program.

Rutgers University Press will have books available for sale at the event.
