To find a journal, magazine, or newspaper article in the most popular databases in your subject area, enter your search term(s) and choose a subject from the pull-down menu. To find books and more in the Library Catalog, enter your term(s) and select a search type in the pull-down menu. For more information see "How Do I Find a Book?"

To find a print or electronic journal in the Rutgers collections, enter its title or keywords in the title and select the appropriate search type in the pull-down menu. For more information, see "How Do I Find a Journal?"

To find a list of books, textbooks, and electronic articles placed on course reserve by your instructor, enter your instructor's last name, course name, or course number and search.

Select a search type, enter your term(s), and use the drop-down menus to make your search more specific.

Selecting a search type

Search Type Description
Basic – Use when unsure of the exact title, author, subject heading, etc. Search for your term(s) anywhere in the record. Use AND, OR, or NOT to combine terms. If none of those connectors are used, the system automatically combines the terms with AND. Use quotes " to search for an exact phrase. Use the drop-down menu to specify that your terms are part of the title, author, subject, etc.
Advanced – Use for more complicated searches that combine terms in different fields or use limits such as publication date. Search for your term(s) anywhere in the record, but with the ability to combine terms in the fields you specify (e.g., title, author, subject, etc.). Use the 'Limit Your Results' menus to limit your search to a specific library, format, and/or language. You can also specify a year or range of years for your search.
Browse – Use when looking for a known item or to browse a list of titles, authors, etc. Retrieve a browsable alphabetical list of titles, journal titles, authors, subjects, or call numbers beginning with the first word or call number entered. Authors should always be entered last name first in a browse search.
Course Reserves – Use to find items for classes. Search for items placed on reserve for specific classes.

Book location and availability

To find out whether the book you want is available and where it is located, look for the following information toward the bottom of the record:

Library Name/Campus – The name of the library that owns a copy of the item and the campus on which that library is located

Sub-location – The general area where the item is shelved

Call Number – The location code indicating the shelf where the item is located

Status – The current status of the item, e.g., whether it is currently on the shelf or checked out

Type-Circulate – The format of the item and whether or not it can be checked out
