Trans Research Ethics: Challenges and Recommendations for Change

Part of the Babs Siperstein Humanities and Medicine Seminars - Focus on LGBTQ+

Presentation Title: Trans Research Ethics: Challenges and Recommendations for Change

Presenter: Zack Marshall, Dept. of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary

Zack Marshall (PhD, Community Health) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary, with transdisciplinary training in psychology, social work, and community health. His current work explores the intersections of ethics, participatory research methods, and critical data studies. Incorporating community-based research practices and a science and technology studies lens, Zack is passionate about how we can leverage research for transformative social change.

Ethical research practices include ensuring that communities have access to research findings. For this reason, Professor Marshall is committed to open access publishing. Trans communities have been studied extensively, and he believes the communities should have access to the findings of this research. Being able to locate relevant research also relates to healthcare access, as trans people and their families are often required to be well informed in order to obtain the best available care. He also believes access to accurate information helps to combat mis/disinformation. Altmetrics is one tool that can provide new insights into who is drawing on trans academic research for these purposes.
