Description

Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Burney Newspapers Collection is a full-text, full-image collection of over 1000 newspapers, newsbooks, pamphlets, and broadsides dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They have been digitized from the Reverend Charles Burney Collection at the British Museum. Most were published in London, but some were published in other parts of Great Britain, and a few were published overseas.

The collection contains nearly 500 newspapers, nearly 300 pamphlets and broadsides, and approximately 300 newsbooks. Circulated during the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, newsbooks were small, cheap weekly pamphlets of current news, that is, the precursors to modern newspapers. The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Burney Newspapers Collection chronicles a critical period in the political history of Great Britain and as well as the early history of journalism in the English-speaking world.
