Simplify Your Research with Citation Management Tools
Universitywide
Have you ever spent more time formatting your bibliography than you expected? Between tracking down missing references, organizing dozens of articles, and making sure every citation follows the correct style, managing references can become one of the most frustrating parts of academic writing.
Proper citations are essential for giving credit to original authors, helping readers locate sources, and maintaining academic integrity. Fortunately, citation management tools can automate many of these repetitive tasks, saving hours of manual work. Rutgers University Libraries offer students, faculty, and staff access to EndNote 2025 and EndNote Fusion to help organize references, manage research materials, and create bibliographies more efficiently. Rutgers librarians also provide support for Zotero, a free reference manager, if you choose to use it.
How Citation Management Tools Can Help
EndNote 2025 and EndNote Fusion offer a range of features to help users manage their research materials. Both tools allow users to:
- Collect and organize references from library databases, online catalogs, and other research sources.
- Find and manage full-text articles and PDF documents.
- Insert citations into research papers and manuscripts while writing.
- Automatically generate bibliographies in citation styles such as APA, MLA, Chicago, and many others.
- Share references and support collaboration with other researchers.
Both EndNote 2025 and EndNote Fusion include an AI powered Research Assistant that can help users summarize scholarly articles, ask questions about documents, and translate research content. These features complement traditional citation management functions, but AI-generated information should be reviewed for accuracy.
Both tools support writing workflows with Microsoft Word and Google Docs, as well as collaboration with other researchers.
By automating routine citation management tasks, these tools can reduce repetitive formatting work and improve efficiency. However, users should always review imported reference information and generated citations for accuracy and completeness.
EndNote 2025 Versus EndNote Fusion
Although they share similar names, EndNote 2025 and EndNote Fusion are separate products with different features and workflows. EndNote Fusion was formerly RefWorks, and it still looks similar.
The main distinction is how researchers access and manage their libraries: EndNote 2025 combines desktop functionality with online synchronization and offline work, while EndNote Fusion offers a browser-based workflow without a desktop application. EndNote Fusion also offers a plagiarism and AI content checker that helps users identify potential text similarities with existing sources and AI-generated content. The best choice depends on your research needs and preferred workflow.
Not sure which one to choose? Rutgers University Librarians can help you compare the options and select the tool that best meets your needs.
How Rutgers University Libraries Can Help
The Libraries can help students, faculty, and staff use citation management tools effectively. Here are three key avenues of support available to you:
