BDSL is a comprehensive bibliography and index of publications on German language and literary studies dating from 1985 to the present. It includes around 500,000 citations to monographs, journal articles, reviews, collected studies, and newspapers. A variety of search options are available, including author, treated author, treated work, title, publisher, and keyword. It also offers limiting by date, publication type, and thematic and chronological categories. The database interface is in German.

This database is the electronic continuation of Bibliographie der Deutschen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, an annual publication compiled since 1957 from the acquisitions of Germany's best collection in the field, which is maintained at the City and University Library in Frankfurt am Main. This bibliography is commonly known to Germanists as Eppelsheimer-Köttelwesch (the names of its first compilers).
