American Drama 1714–1915
American Drama 1714–1915 contains the full text of over 1500 plays from U.S. theatrical history (including some from the British colonial era), which have all been re-keyed from first editions or scholarly editions to ensure accuracy. All types of works for the sage are represented, including verse, farces, melodramas, minstrel shows, realist plays, frontier plays, temperance dialogues, and a range of other genres. Major dramatists include David Belasco, Rachel Crothers, Augustin Daly, Clyde Fitch, Edward Harrigan, James Herne, William Dean Howells and Joaquin Miller. All plays in this collection are in English. These plays reflect the cultural mores of their times and show how American society and entertainment have developed and changed. Some plays and performance mediums may contain themes and content that are now considered outdated or offensive.
