English Drama
English Drama contains more than 3,900 plays in verse and prose from English (and, in some cases, British) theatrical history, dating from the late 13th century to the early 20th. The plays have all been re-keyed from first editions or scholarly editions to ensure accuracy. All plays in this collection are in English. The collection covers a wide variety of theatrical periods and traditions, including medieval morality plays and mystery cycles, Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, Restoration plays, and nineteenth-century closet dramas. It includes works by major dramatists such as Ben Jonson, Aphra Behn, William Wycherley, Oliver Goldsmith, Richard Sheridan, Oscar Wilde and J. M. Synge.
These plays reflect the cultural mores of their times and show how Great Britain's society and entertainment have developed and changed. Some plays and performance mediums may contain themes and content that are now considered outdated or offensive.
