Description

Food Studies Online is a collection of digitized primary and secondary sources, images, and videos that document how food has been understood in historical, sociological, and cultural contexts in the 20th-21st centuries. Many materials are focused on the U.S. and the U.K., but some global materials are also included. Major highlights include:

  • U.S. National Archives: Records related to the school lunch program (1940-1973)
  • U.S. National Archives: World War II (WWII) Food Campaign Files (1941-1948)
  • U.K. National Archives, Kew: Archives related to British WWII rationing, food programs, and labor programs, including the Women’s Land Army.
  • Historical diet books from the 1900s - 1960s
  • Food ephemera from the 1900s- 1960s, including educational pamphlets from food production companies, food labels, advertisements, and recipe books.
  • The Cheese Reporter (1929-2014), a trade magazine from Wisconsin about the dairy industry covering news and national trends in food safety, pricing, pasteurization, food policy, and agriculture.

Please note that some digitized items may contain views, imagery, or terminology that may be inaccurate, biased, or offensive, and dietary advice given in these materials may now be known to be incorrect.

This collection may be searched alongside other primary source collections in Global & International Studies Collection (Alexander Street).
