The Archibald S. Alexander Library has announced it will remain open for 24 hours a day to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff during reading days and final exams for specific periods of time. These time periods are:

  • Tuesday, May 6, 8 a.m., through Saturday, May 10, 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 11, 11 a.m., through Wednesday May 14, 2 a.m.

Alexander Library, which is located on the College Avenue Campus in New Brunswick, receives more than 400,000 visitors annually, with the number of visitors peaking during finals.

Other libraries with extended and late hours during finals

Three other major Rutgers University–New Brunswick libraries—the James Dickson Carr Library on Livingston Campus, the Mabel Smith Douglass Library on Douglass Campus, and the Library of Science and Medicine on Busch Campus—also are in high demand both throughout the year and during finals. Carr Library, Douglass Library, and the Library of Science and Medicine are open to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff as late as 2 a.m. during the semester. For the upcoming finals, all three libraries are extending their weekend hours as well, including remaining open until midnight on Friday and Sunday nights.

Rutgers-only hours

Alexander Library, Carr Library, Douglass Library, and the Library of Science and Medicine will be open to the public for limited hours. These “public hours” are listed within the detailed building hours found on the Rutgers University Libraries website. In preparation for the final exam period, these four libraries already have begun implementing enhanced procedures to enforce Rutgers-only hours. These procedures are meant to maximize available space for Rutgers students, faculty, and staff during a period of especially high library use.

Rutgers students, faculty, and staff are expected to have their Rutgers ID cards with them when using these four libraries during finals weeks.
