NIH Public Access Policy

The National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH-funded research. The 2024 NIH Public Access Policy went into effect on July 1, 2025, for manuscripts resulting from NIH-funded research accepted for publication in a journal on or after July 1, 2025. The policy requires that all NIH-funded investigators submit or have submitted for them an electronic version of their Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAM) to PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance for publication. The paper must be made publicly available immediately (without embargo) on the official date of publication in a manner consistent with copyright law. Failure to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy could result in discontinuation of funding or no future funding.
